The Martin family is something of a brick wall for me. My Martin story begins in Madison County, IL where my grandfather, Willam Scott Martin 1915 - 1957, married Eleanor Clarice Syers. They had 3 children and lived a good portion of their married life in Pontoon Beach, just outside of Granite City.
Grandpa Bill's parents divored when he was young and he remembered going across the Mississippi River to see his father and one day those visits stopped.
His father, Willam Marvin Martin 1885 - 1949, was born to Kate Frierson Force Martin and her 2nd husband, William Edward Martin. Great Grandfather William was born in Hokes Bluff, Etowah County, Alabama. Great grandpa remarried had 2 more children and lived and died in the St Louis, MO area.
His father, Willam Edward Martin 1832 - 1908, was born in South Carolina. I believe he died in or near Oxford, Florida but I can not find him in findagrave or among any death records.
But before the 1900 census, Kate and William moved their young family to Oxford, Sumter County, Florida. For anyone familiar with Florida today - this is a big time golf community known as the Villages. Oddly, in the small town of Oxford there were other Martin families and they were from South Carolina. Could it be an odd chance that they lived near another family with the same surname? I have taken the time to document this family of unknown value, Harmon Eli Martin, as well as the various men named Tolliver Martin that also appears in the family lore. The story that was passed on states that William Edward Martin's father was John Martin and Harriet McGhee was his mother.
I have documented the family stories that were captured years ago. So far I have not been able to prove the details of the Martin history but the tide might be turning with the advent of DNA testing. I have also built several pages of research that I call my wild goose chases.
