From the Union County, Kentucky History Book ..."John Syers is the son of John and Mary (Uhlrich) Syers, or as it is known in the German, Zieger. His parents were Prussians, his father being a shoemaker in that country. They came to America in 1846, and proceeded to Philadelphia, where they staid a short time, and then went to Pittsburg. Mr. Syers was born in Pittsburg, Penn., June 27, 1843. His parents moved to DeKoven when he was quite young, and he consequently received most of his school training in the common schools of that place. He married Roxena Boettger, of Union County, on May 2, 1867. She was born March 13, 1848. A sketch of her parents will be found in the sketch of Mr. Frederick Boettger, who is her brother. Six children have been born of this union, viz: John, born March 25, 1868; William, born February 23, 1870; Fred., born October 18, 1871; Jacob, born September 1873; Henry, born August 13, 1875; Roxinie, born February 16, 1882. Mr. Syers is a miner of good skill, and a public spirited man, whose presence in the community is well felt and appreciated. He is a member of the Knights of Honor and also belong to the Blue Lodge, Chapter, Council and Commandery in Manonry. He has held the office of Junior Deacon and Tyler, in the blue Lodge, but was never elevated to any office in other bodies. He is an exemplary neighbor, a progressive citizen and an earnest, thoughtful man, anxious for the welfare and advancement of his town and vicinity." 1880 Census - Union County, KY
