I had completed the additional 3 quilts just in time to
go to Christmas dinner. I stitched the last stitches just 30 minutes
before we had to leave the house. There were 6 quilts tucked in large
bags and the 3 oldest kids had no idea what was hidden in them.
Payton, Gage and Dalton visit more often and knew that I was making "blankies"
but until that moment didn't know that they were from Christmas. (It
was an added bonus.)
The quilts for the older kids were not based on a cartoon theme.
And this quilt was actually started by someone else. My husband's
first wife was very talented and had started sewing together some blocks but
they were never finished when she passed away. I put together the
pieces and slipped the quilt into a gift bag. Knowing that that quilt
would mean a lot to whomever got it, I didn't want to play favorites so each
of the girls got to pick a number between 1 and 10 and person who selected
the number closest to mine was able to make the 1st selection. The
quilt was no sooner out of the gift bag when someone in the room recognized
some of the patches of fabric. I had not told them before hand that
there was any significance to any of the quilts.
