Cassell / Kassell Family

What a great resource we have in the internet! For years I was at a brick wall with my Cassell / Kassell research. I had a huge amount of time invested in reading films and trying to put together puzzle pieces of information about my Cassell / Kassell Connections. But then one day, a wonderful e-mail arrived from Germany. It was from Birgit Gerstner [Birgit.Gerstner@db1iat.de] and helped me connect to my ancestors who came to this country from Southern Germany (Baden).

For me this was quite an experience. I used to live in Germany while I was in the Air Force from 1980 - 1983. I was stationed at Rhein Main AFB and lived in Wallerstatden. I tryed to spend every weekend that I could out roaming the countryside, going to Fests or just shopping on the economy. The people was wonderful and friendly and I can honestly saw that I did see some of the countryside. Most of my time was spent in places that I go to for the day like Heidelberg, Darmstadt or Frankfurt Am Main. I was able to go to Octoberfest in Munich, Wurstfest in Dürkheimer, and I even visited the beautiful village of Bergesgarten. Even my son was born in Germany while I was stationed there.

Returning to the e-mail from Birgit, I learned that Medard (John Methardus) emmigrated with 2 brothers. I researched the "Germans to America" Series of books located at the Omaha Public Library and found Medard with Remigius but did not find Raimund. I am not saavy enough to know where else to look for the ship's records. But they came to New Orleans from Haive, France on the Minnesota. I'm not sure when he booked passage to come north to St. Louis nor do I have any idea what happened to Remigius. Any ideas on an "American" version of the Remigius name would be appreciated.

Birgit provided this additional information.

Kassel Raimund, Remigius und Medard; die drei Brüder im Alter von 30, 28 und 25 Jahren wanderten zusammen nach New Orleans aus, ihr Vermögen betrug 210 fl. 1851 ausgewandert. (Means Medard and Remigius had a third brother. His name was Raimund and he emigrated with them to New Orleans. They had 210 Gulden (Gulden is the name of the money they used at that time.)
Kassel Barbara, 22 Jahre alt, ledig. 1860 ausgewandert.
Kassel Placidus, 44 Jahre alt, ledig. 1851 ausgewandert.

Other information from the e-mail: My name is Birgit and I live in the Baden area. I also do research my ancestry but I am also interested to find out where the emigrants from our area went to. Medart and Remigius were born in Durmersheim, Baden, Germany. It is a little city between the river Rhine and the Black Forest, close to the french border.
Martin Burkart was writing a book about the history and about old families of Durmersheim. It is also to see online. If you go to follow link http://mitglied.lycos.de/Durmersche_Gschicht/inhaltsverzeichnis.htm and click on 13 Die Auswanderer, you can see there the names of your Kassels Your pc can search the name Medard on this page, so it is easy to find.
You will see folling there Kassel Raimund, Remigius und Medard; die drei Brüder im Alter von 30, 28 und 25 Jahren wanderten zusammen nach New Orleans aus, ihr Vermögen betrug 210 fl. 1851 ausgewandert.
Means Medard and Remigius had a third brother. His name was Raimund and he emigrated with them to New Orleans. They had 210 Gulden ( Gulden is the name of the money they used at that time.)
Martin sometimes helps with the research, his email is martin.burkart@bluewin.ch or you can write to the church parish in Durmersheim. But they don't have email.
Snailmail address is:
Pfarramt St. Dionysius
Römerstrasse 45
76448 Durmersheim
I have also a homepage and I have a Kassel emigration page at: http://www.db1iat.de/genealogie/gen-durmhkassel.htm
I hope it is ok with you that I added your informations behind your ancestors name, if not let me know.

Here you can see other names of emigrants from our area, including Rastetter, Koch and Kühn ( Kuhn). I was looking but couldn'd find Herbert Koch on a list here, but this only means that the lists are not complete.
Rastetter families you will find in Mörsch (Moersch) , Forchheim, Bietigheim, Karlsruhe-Gruenwinkel, Karlsruhe-Bulach and Ettlingen. This cities are all close to Durmersheim.
Where have you found this ship they came with, if I may ask. I am seeking for a while passenger lists from this time from Havre to New Orleans, cause my gggreatgrandmother' s sister Martina Altmaier and her brother Bonifaz (Bonifatius) Altmaier from Durmersheim also went to New Orleans 1851/1852.
That's all for now. I hope it helps.
Birgit

Martin was able to fill in many more blanks and I am so very grateful!
