Genealogy has been my hobby and passion for more than 30 years. My interest in family history reaches back to conversations with my grandmother. I remember clearly asking her about her father's Syers family and if there was a possiblity if he was still living. It was not a topic she was willing to discuss with her 10 year old granddaughter.

The Family :

I like to share what I find. Why waste a great wild goose chase? It might help someone else. Please note, if I have added research that I can not tie to these families, I have worked to identify it as a "wild goose chase".

DNA Testing and Family Stories:

I begin my journey into DNA testing to confirm the ties to the various RAY cousins that I had been researching for many years. Before home computers and the internet, much of my research time was spent at libraries, cemeteries and the Family History Centers of the local LDS church. I read through rolls of microfilm Saturday after Saturday to make discoveries.

In 2012, I took the autosomal DNA test with FamilyTreeDNA and could not understand the results. But with enough research, I had my brother take the Y-DNA test and yes indeed, it tied the RAY together when I added in autosomal (family finder) testing for him.

Through this effort, one cousin found a long lost letter written by Thomas Franklin Ray 1853 - 1940 detailing a number of stories that he remembered. The letters were written in the 1930's and while there are a few errors, it provided great insight to his life and times. Even if you are not a RAY researcher, this is certainly worth the read.

DNA

With the availablity of DNA, there are a number of people that are recently found cousins. I have had several family members and friends tested on familytreedna and Ancestry. I have also posted results on gedmatch.com.

Navigating The Site

Extra effort is put into this site to make sure that I have provided documentation for my research. Over the course of 30 + years, some of my original sources have been lost. Additionally, a number of researchers have passed including my early research buddies Jim Washam and Dorothy Thomas. The main navigation on the top of each page ties to a grandparent of the majority of my siblings. Within some families there are a few hidden secrets that are turning up as well as a few quiet rumors. Robert Ray had a paternity suit brought against him during the late 60's or early 70's and I suspect there may be another RAY family member out there that has yet to be discovered. Additionally, Walter Dudley allowed his ex-wife's husband to adopt his biological daughters. They would probably be in their early 50's and might have moved to Missouri. So far none of these extended family members have shown up in DNA test results.
