Grunewald Family

Special thanks to Wolfgang W. Osterhage for updated information on the Grunewald / Campbell Connection.

(George) Scott Campbell Jr. (1889 - 1951) was the first husband of Edna Grunewald Campbell Murphy Bardsley. Edna was the only daughter born to Wilhelmine (Minne) Katharina Henriette van Fuehren and Franz Grunewald. Minnie Grunewald was born 18 Aug 1870 in Burgsteinfurt, a small town in North Rhine - Westfalia in North Germany near the Dutch border.

Minnie's uncle, Eugen Carl Franz Beifang, born 26 Aug. 1840 emigrated to the US from Bremen on the ship Erna to Baltimore, Maryland. He arrived on July 3, 1869. Eugen was the contact person for Minnie who emigrated from Brement to Baltimore at the age of 17 on the ship "Weser" and arrived there on the 7th of July 1888.

Minnie married Franz Grun(e)wald, who came from Hambrug to the US and they had one daughter Edna (who married my ancestor George Scott Campbell Jr.)

Minnie had a sister, Anna Wilhelmine Aleide van Fuehren, born Nov. 19, 1866 in Burgsteinfurt, Germany. They had 3 daughters: Charlotte, Eleonore and Henriette Mueller.

Eleonore Mueller was born 7 July 1897 in Burgsteinfurt and married Hermann Wilhelm (William) Osterhage, 17 July 1918 in Rheine, Germany. Together they had 3 children: Gustav, Werner, and Brunhilde. William emigrated to the St. Louis, MO area and his wife and children joined him there. They lived at 1423 N. Mallinckrodt Street in St. Louis and The wife and children returned to Germany in April 1932 and stayed in letter contact with William until Oct 4, 1937. William may have moved "north" to Granite City, Illinois. He died at 1817 Delmar Street (Granite City?) and the informant on the death certificate was a Mrs. Bardsley living on 1639 2nd Street. (probably Madison, Illinois).

Wolfgang is looking for more information on the location of William 1937 - 1944. And of course, Wolfgang would like to connect with other members of the Grunwald, Beifang and Osterhage family members.

Pat's Research

It seems quite interesting that Minnie Grunewald, a widow, was living with the Pufault family in Granite City, Illinois. Minnie's daughter Gladys married George Scott Campbell Jr. while Scott's sister, Stella Campbell married Carl Pufalt. Is there a connection between the Pufault family and the Grunewald family?

Scott Campbell Jr & Family
Gladys Markovich, unsure about children, Emma Cassell Campbell - Scott's mother, and Scott Campbell Jr. ca early to mid 1950's.

Edna also married Henry Murphy and lived on Buchanan Street in St. Louis, MO. This would have been between 1920 and 1930. In 1930 (according to Wolfgang) Minnie Grunwald lived with her daughter and 2 granddaughters Gladys (Murphy) and Edna (Murphy). Edna married a 3rd time to a Mr. Bardsley.

I'm not sure what happened to Little Edna but my mother can remember her in the 1960's. We contacted Gladys before her death and she had hoped to give us more information but by that time, her health was in decline and we did not obtain any information. Gladys married Frank Markovich (d. 19 Apr 1974) and had 4 children. One of the children, Frank Markovich Jr. died in 2001.
