Letters From the President Rutherford B. Hayes Library Manuscript Collection

I have ordered a number of letters from the manuscript collection of the Rutherford B. Hayes Library in Fremont, Ohio. These letters were either written by Manning Force or were to Manning Force. General Manning Force was one of several children born to Peter Force and his wife Hannah Evans. Peter Force (1790-1868) was a collector of manuscripts so important that his collection is housed in the Library of Congress. He and his wife had 8 children.

My interest in this family is through their son, Henry Clay Force, 1832-1874 who was married to my great great grandmother Katherine Ogie Frierson The widow Katherine married Willam Martin in 1879. Her oldest son, Peter Evans Force (1868-1930), was taken back to the Washington DC area to be raised by his paternal uncle William Q. Force after his father's death. Peter, however, eventually went back to live in Alabama.

Children of Peter and Hannah Evans:

William Quereau Force (1820-1880), printer in Washington DC
Manning Ferguson Force (1824-1899), General in the Union Army
Charles Fairchild Force (1827-1884), doctor who served in the Confederate Army
Edward Leggett Force (1829-1863)
Peter Force (1829-1830)
Henry Clay Force, 1832-1874, 1st husband of Katherine Ogie Frierson
Samuel Southard Force (1835-1856)
Marion Evans Force (1838-1861)
